Carrot’s Coffee & Tea is a small artisan cafe that prides itself on offering an alternative to the chemical-laden stuff served elsewhere. We are proud to feature:

  • Organic coffee
  • Hand crafted espresso drinks (never with an extra charge for soymilk!)
  • A selection of organic teas
  • Fresh grilled gourmet panini served daily (though we serve much more than just this)
  • Breakfast
  • Gluten-free pastries from Oakland’s Mariposa Bakery
  • Naturally sweetened sodas
  • 100% fruit puree smoothies (no sugar, corn syrup or dairy added)

This shop is truly a gem!

About the owner & the name:

Sarah (owner/operator) grew up on the peninsula and has always loved the Bay Area. While she didn’t like coffee or espresso (or even tea for that matter) until a few years ago, she quickly grew to love the culture. Her only exposure to espresso drinks for a long time was from national chains and trying sips of friends’ beverages. It wasn’t until her first true cappuccino in Florence, Italy that she discovered the rich aromas and satisfying flavors that good espresso drinks provide.

Well, this turned into an unexpected interest/hobby for a few years. During this time she also found that she enjoyed loose leaf teas much more than the store-bought bags. After too many jobs in dying industries resulting in far too many layoffs in a short amount of time, Sarah finally decided it was time to take control of her destiny and become her own boss! She attended the Belissimo American Coffee School (ABC) in January and February of 2009 and has found her passion in the coffee industry.

“A lot of people ask about the name of the cafe,” Sarah explains. “They assume almost automatically that it’s because of my red hair, but I can assure you that isn’t the case. In fact, I’ve never even had a nickname. The name holds different meanings for me. For one, it’s just a fun-cool name and I feel it sets us apart from the bigger guys. When I was about four years old, though, my family moved from an apartment to a house and the first thing I did was run to the backyard to see what kinds of adventures I could get into back there. Well, to my surprise and amazement I found two carrots growing in the dirt. I dug them up and ran to my parents and asked if I could eat them. They of course said that I could after washing them off. They were the best tasting carrots I ever had! They also made me appreciate fresh foods from the earth and became my favorite vegetable for life.”

“I also think that kids somehow identify with carrots. We see ‘Bugs Bunny’ eating them and they’re such a fun and bright color. It’s hard to resist them! To some they represent healthful eating habits. Yet to others they represent the endless cycle of the yo-yo dieting that has gripped our society since the early 1920′s. While I’m all for eating healthfully, I am anti-diet industry. It’s not that I don’t want people to be mindful of what they eat – I do – it’s that I want people to be kinder to themselves and their bodies. You simply can’t do that while following a diet that talks about ‘flabby thighs’ or ‘flat bellies.’ I’m more interested in nutrition in as pure a form as you can achieve. And for me that is represented by fresh, organic carrots. Which, by the way, are always available for FREE in the cafe!”

“Not to cheapen the nutritional stuff, but my cat’s also named Carrot. She’s a sweet and feisty brown-black-grey tabby. She’s six years old and gives my husband and I such joy in our lives. We have been waiting to have children until we are both mentally and financially prepared (we’re halfway there), so she’s been our little baby (and sometimes warden) when we needed to share our love with someone. You just don’t know how to laugh until your cat makes you make an ass of yourself!”

Come on by the cafe and try some of our goodies. You’ll be glad you did!If

So glad you are selling gluten-free items from Mariposa. There is real need for fresh baked GF goods on the Peninsula and I’m so glad you are filling that niche!
